Carlos Granell

Bio

I am a computational GIScience researcher working on geospatial technologies, spatial analysis and visualization, and reproducibility practices in GIScience. I was a Ramón y Cajal postdoctoral fellow (2015–2020), a postdoctoral researcher in the then‑called Digital Earth and Reference Data Unit of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy (2011–2014), and both a predoctoral (2003-2026) and postdoctoral researcher (2006-2010) at UJI, where I earned my Ph.D. (2006). I was appointed Associate Professor at UJI in 2021.

I am an active team member of the Reproducible AGILE initiative (since 2017) and the AGILE community; n fact, I served as an elected member of the AGILE Council (2018-2026). Additionally, I am member of the ACM (2014-) and part of the Geospatial Technologies research group (GEOTEC), which is affiliated with the Institute of New Imaging Technologies (INIT) at UJI. I have been co-coordinating GEOTEC since November 2022. At GEOTEC, we leverage computing and geospatial technologies to address everyday problems from a multidisciplinary perspective, applying diverse theoretical approaches and practical (geospatial) methods to social and environmental issues such as mobility & transport, public and mental health, environmental health, sustainable cities, and education.

Research interests

GIScience: Theoretical and applied research on fundamental topics of GIScience, such as geospatial data science, GeoAI, spatial analysis and visualisation, and geospatial data integration.
Urban computing: Computational geospatial technologies and GeoAI to address multidisciplinary problems, specifically in urban contexts, such as mobility, environmental health, and public health.
Open science and reproducibility practices (in GIScience): Reuse, reproducibility, replicability, transparency, openness, integrity, and ethics – all in general terms, but applied specifically to computational research in GIScience.

Teaching

Lecturer on Spatial Data Science and thesis supervisor for the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies, and lecturer of software engineering for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering.
